My name is Zheming Xu, and I’m a PhD candidate at Beijing Jiaotong University. My research is in Multi-view Clustering, which aims to group data objects into their natural categories by using multiple different sets of views/modalities.

My path to Tromsø and Visual Intelligence started with an application for a national scholarship. I wanted to come here because my work aligns closely with Professor Michael Kampffmeyer’s research. Even though that first application didn’t succeed, it led to a really valuable collaboration. We kept working together online, wrote a paper, and got it published. Meeting in person later at a conference in the US strengthened our partnership, and I was thrilled when Michael invited me for a three-month research visit here.

The visit has been both productive and promising. Before coming, Michael, Rogelio Andrade Mancisidor and I had already been working on a paper together. While in Tromsø, I focused on wrapping up the rebuttal for that manuscript. We also spent time brainstorming a new, focused research direction, and have laid a solid foundation to build on. I’m really excited to continue this collaboration.

Life in Tromsø has been truly unforgettable. Over these three months, I experienced the gradual transition into the polar night and was fortunate enough to witness the stunning Northern Lights by the lake twice—an absolutely breathtaking sight. I also had the pleasure of attending a Christmas party with the group, enjoying delicious traditional Norwegian food and warm company. I remember Kristoffer Wickstrøm sharing his hope that every visitor could easily feel part of the group. This truly moved me, and my time here has genuinely felt like home.

The atmosphere is warm, encouraging, and wonderfully supportive. Contributing to and participating in the NLDL Conference 2026 in such an environment was also a fantastic experience. I am glad not only to have been able to help, but also to attend the conference and learn about new research areas, which I found very inspiring.

All in all, my stay has been everything I hoped for and more. I’ve made many new friends and seen so many amazing things. I would like to sincerely thank Visual Intelligence for their kindness and hospitality, and especially Professor Michael for his invitation and guidance. I will always treasure these three months in Tromsø.
