"I am proud to have been able to work together with so many fantastic students, colleagues and collaborators, often across disciplines and in industry," Jenssen says.

The Research and Development (R&D) Award honors an individual, unit or environment that has excelled by perfoming research or artistic development work of particularly high quality. The award recognizes its winner as a national leader in their academic discipline.

"By standing stronger together for mutual benefit, we have created a high quality research environment at UiT where we advance fundamental machine learning research to develop reliable and resilient technology for real world problems that matter for people – for instance in health or for earth and climate observations," Jenssen adds.

According to the nomination, Jenssen is an internationally recognized researcher in the field and has helped build UiT into a leading AI research environment. He received the award by carrying out excellent outstanding research in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, which is frequently published in top-tier scientific venues and journals.

Jenssen researches novel AI methods through information theory for the development of reliable and explainable AI, paving the way for more efficient and responsible applications. His extensive work has lead to numerous innovations within industrial domains such as medicine and health and observational systems.

But what exactly motivates Jenssen to conduct this work?

"What drives me is to work together with like-minded people to help solve some of the pressing societal challenges of our time through research," Jenssen says.

He believes it is essential that university faculty members prioritize the development of North Norwegian communities and innovation, and with that, UiT itself.

"To play a role in this bigger picture has always been a major driving force to me," he concludes.
