Research-based innovation involves collaborations between research institutions and R&D active companies which seeks to address long-term needs, solve relevant societal challenges, and securing future value creation.

A close collaboration between Norwegian academia and industry is essential to leverage AI's potential and strengthen AI Norway's international competitiveness. Research-based AI innovation is a key priority area in the Norwegian long-term plan for research and higher education 2023-2032.

While Norwegian industry's R&D investments have increased in recent years, it invests less in R&D activities compared to the OECD partners. What should we do to strengthen research-based AI innovation in Norway? What opportunities does this represent—both for the academic and industrial sectors? What are the challenges, and what should Norwegian academia, the institute sector, and industry do to solve them?

At the event "Forskningsdrevet innovasjon innen KI: Hvordan styrker vi det sammen?", SFI Visual Intelligence brought together representatives from academia, industry, the institute sector, the Research Council of Norway, and Norwegian politics to discuss why and how Norwegian academia and industry should collaborate more closely to develop innovative artificial intelligence. The event took place at Kunstig intelligens-teltet at Arendalsuka 2025.
