Visit from The Computer Vision Lab, University of Victoria, Canada

The Norwegian Computing Center recently had a visit from Mélissa Côté, Research Associate at the Computer Vision Lab, University of Victoria (UVic) in Canada. They are one of the few research institutions internationally working on deep learning methods for interpretation of marine acoustic data. NR are actively doing research in this field, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, through the Visual Intelligence and CRIMAC SFIs. Arnt-Børre Salberg, Olav Brautaset, Line Eikvil and Ingrid Utseth from NR had a productive meeting with Mélissa, discussing their shared interest in deep learning and marine acoustic data.

During the visit, both Mélissa and the NR researchers presented an overview of their work in this field over the past few years. Interestingly, the two groups see the ocean from opposite directions. At NR, the data they received from IMR are collected from hull-mounted echo sounders pointing downwards. The team at UVic get their data from stationary echosounders placed at the bottom, pointing upwards. The presentations led to interesting discussions on methodology, and the similarities and differences in the challenges each group encounters when working with these complex data sets.
