Visual Intelligence Researchers Amund Vedal and Arnt Børre Salberg recently presented ongoing Visual Intelligence research at a plankton-themed workshop organized by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway

By Petter Bjørklund, Communications Advisor at SFI Visual Intelligence

The aim of the workshop was to present and discuss ongoing plankton research—covering central topics such as ecosystem dynamics, environmental monitoring, and machine learning-based analysis of plankton data. Vedal and Salberg are researchers at the Norwegian Computing Center.

Vedal presented new work on hierarchical classification of plankton images. The proposed methodology shows great promise for improving automatic detection and classification of these and similar organisms.

The workshop's primary takeaways focuses on how novel sensor technology and machine learning can improve research on plankton, data organization and access, and methods for automatic classification and information extraction.
