Tell us about your PhD project

During my PhD, I worked on several projects related to explainability in AI, mainly focusing on understanding what is happening within the models. I developed new methods to understand latent spaces and analyzed models in the audio and image domain. For the last year of my PhD, I hope to apply and extend some of my previous works to medical data.

Why did you choose Tromsø and Visual Intelligence for your research stay?

The decision to go to Tromsø for my external stay was very easy for me. I met Kristoffer Wickstrøm already in the first months of my PhD during a talk he gave at a summer school and I was intrigued by his work on explainability. Additionally a colleague of mine, Thea Brüsch, visited the group last year and highly recommended the group! Plus, I always wanted to live in Norway for a while, so Tromsø was without a doubt my first choice for my stay. The collaboration started off smoothly with Kristoffer visiting DTU in the fall, where we already brainstormed and tried out several research ideas. This lead to a very productive time at UiT!

What has been the outcome of your research stay?

My external stay started with the NLDL conference, which was a great first week with many interesting talks and social events! I already got to know many researchers in the group and was even more excited to get started. During my time here I got to be part of several very productive group meetings. I especially enjoyed the "Stronger together“ meetings, where we discussed ongoing projects and relevant papers in detail. I got so much important feedback for my work and also learned a lot from other ongoing projects in the group! During my stay we started an exciting collaboration with another PhD student, Suaiba Salahuddin, where we apply my latest work to mammography data. Overall, the stay was super productive, and our collaborations will continue.

How was life in Tromsø?

I only had four months in Tromsø, all in the winter. So I enjoyed lots of snow and northern lights, but also the return of the sun and the surprise of super long days towards the end. I do wish I could’ve stayed for the actual summer as well, but now I definitely have a reason to come back!
