New master program at UiT

The 5-year master program provides a broad and solid foundation for working with artificial intelligence through classes in informatics, mathematics, statistics and specialized subjects on artificial intelligence. The program provides students with the necessary skills in mathematics/statistics and programming/informatics required in the field. It provides a solid background for working on the development of mathematical and statistical methods for extracting information and making decisions based on analysis of different types of data, such as images, text and measurement series. It also gives the students expertise in integrating such methods into IT systems where data can be collected, combined, processed and transmitted efficiently and securely.

The study program emphasizes engineering skills. It facilitates the students to learn theory through practical problem solving and inspires innovation and entrepreneurship. Mathematical and statistical data analysis are largely taught through programming of numerical methods. The computer science subjects are also very experimental, and emphasizes practical exercises and laboratory work. The study program is designed so that the students will be introduced to artificial intelligence applications throughout the study. The higher level courses are closely linked to the research that takes place in the academic environments. In the penultimate semester, students perform a project assignment where they gain experience with research and development work, as well as writing a longer academic report. In the last semester, they are writing a master's thesis with a theme taken from current research questions within artificial intelligence or relevant development assignments from industry and working life. Approved internship must be completed during the study period.
