Meet Solveig, our newest doctoral research fellow

We happily welcome Solveig Thrun, who recently started as a doctoral research fellow at Visual Intelligence in Tromsø in January 2025.

By Petter Bjørklund, Communications Advisor at SFI Visual Intelligence

Thrun is from Lübeck, Germany, and holds a master's degree in medical engineering science from the University of Lübeck. In addition to working as a teaching assistant at the university while writing her thesis, she contributed to various projects related to computed tomography imaging in the Research Group for Tomographic Procedures at Fraunhofer IMTE.

As part of her master's project, she completed a six-month research internship with the UiT Machine Learning Group and Visual Intelligence in Tromsø. Following the internship, Thrun extended her stay to write her thesis, which focused on using deep learning to analyze mammography images for breast cancer detection.

Building on the research from her master's thesis, Thrun's PhD project focuses on developing innovative deep learning-based methods for breast cancer diagnosis and risk prediction.

- I am excited to continue working on a project with the potential to significantly advance the medical field by improving early breast cancer detection rates and enchancing patient outcomes. I look forward to collaborating with an international group of researchers and expanding my knowledge of cutting-edge deep learning techniques, says Thrun.
