We happily welcome Preetraj Bhoodoo, who recently started as a doctoral research fellow at Visual Intelligence in Oslo.

By: Petter Bjørklund, Communication Advisor at Visual Intelligence

Bhoodoo is from Mauritius and holds a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics from the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His degree focused on deep learning applications for Medical X-ray Dark-Field CT.

While working on his thesis, Bhoodoo gained experience through various part-time positions at TUM and the Helmholtz Munich Research Institute in the Core Facility Statisical Consulting. He has also worked as a Data Conversion Consultant at Ceridian (now Dayforce).

Bhoodoo's PhD project focuses on applying deep learning techniques to cardiac ultrasound imaging (echocardiography). The project is conducted in collaboration with GE Healthcare and the Digital Signal Processing and Image Analysis Group at the University of Oslo.

It will explore the potential of deep learning to automate measurements from echocardiograms, assess image quality, and leverage recent advances in foundational neural models. Such models have the potential to learn from large-scale, unlabeled image datasets and integrate additional data sources like clinical reports and electronic health records.

The work will primarily address the challenges of self-supervised learning, with an emphasis on incorporating modeling knowledge, ensuring reliability and uncertainty estimation, and developing explainable models, says Bhoodoo.

- I am excited about diving into new topics and developing innovative ideas, all while advancing the application of deep learning in echocardiography. I look forward to collaborating with a diverse group of researchers and building long-lasting professional relationships, says Bhoodoo.
