By Petter Bjørklund, Communications Officer at SFI Visual Intelligence

COAT is a long-term, ecosystem-based and adaptive observation system. It aims to unravel how climate change impacts arctic tundra food webs, and to enable prudent science-based management. COAT is headed by UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

Salahuddin's primary responsibility is to handle and format ecological and climate data collected through COAT's different monitoring modules from the COAT data portal.

"I will also help develop workflow solutions for visualising and processing COAT’s large-scale datasets, so that researchers can work with the data more efficiently," Salahuddin says.

Salahuddin will also contribute to improving data management, maintaining code and developing more robust and sustainable workflows for the team. The role combines technical development, data management, and collaboration with researchers

"This makes it a very interesting opportunity to apply my experience in a new scientific field," Salahuddin says.

"A new and exciting field"

Salahuddin's PhD project at Visual Intelligence focuses on developing deep-learning methods for breast cancer detection using mammography images. One major part of her work has involved predicting breast density, which is an important risk factor for breast cancer.

Salahuddin is excited to combine her position as a PhD Fellow with her new role at COAT.

"I feel very happy and motivated to have started this new role. I find the work highly interesting because it allows me to apply my technical and data-science experience to climate and ecological research, which is a new and exciting field for me," Salahuddin says.

She looks forward to contributing to COAT’s work by helping improve how ecological and climate data are managed and used. She believes this can make a positive impact through better data workflows and tools.

"I’m excited to learn more about this field and to continue developing professionally while finishing my PhD," Salahuddin says.

Centre Director Robert Jenssen is excited about Suaiba's new role at COAT.

"I am very proud that Suaiba is now part of such an exciting and important initiative that COAT represents. Our PhD researchers' skills and expertise in AI are highly sought after by high-profile research environments and industry in and outside North Norway, and Suaiba is no exception to this rule," Jenssen says.

"I wish her all the best in this exciting new role. I am happy to still get to work alongside her while she is completing her PhD project, and possibly in the future too, in conjunction with her work at COAT" Jenssen says.
