Meet Erik, our new senior engineer

We are happy to announce that Erik Heggeli recently started working as a senior engineer at Visual Intelligence (VI) in Tromsø.

Heggeli's background is within computer science and has, since his first part-time position at the UiT IT department in 2022, been a familiar IT figure at the university.

His primary work tasks involve managing, maintaining and optimizing the GPU cluster at UiT Machine Learning (ML) Group in Tromsø, while serving as an important advising resource for our UiT-based VI researchers.

A point of contact between the ML group and the High-Perfomance Computing (HPC) group at UiT, he will also assist our researchers in using national super computing systems such as FRAM, the Finnish LUMI system, BETZY and SAGA.

- My position is about facilitating and strengthening research within AI and machine learning. It is exciting to get to cooperate so closely with so many experienced researchers who work on groundbreaking projects within the fields, says Heggeli.

Among a wide amount of other important tasks, Heggeli will use his expertise to further develop and refine the upcoming AI exhibit for children at the Science Centre of Northern Norway, which will consist of four AI-based games catered to children under the age of 10.

- I am sort of an "all-purpose" tech guy that can help out with a lot of stuff, Heggeli chuckles.
